With the opening of the 2024 Gangwon Winter Youth Olympic Games (hereinafter referred to as Gangwon 2024) just two days away, International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach visited the Gangneung Athletes’ Village, where athletes will stay during the competition.

On the morning of the 17th, Chairman Bach visited the athletes’ village set up in the dormitory of Gangneung-Wonju National University with Choi Jong-gu, chairman of the Gangwon 2024 Organizing Committee, and toured the weight training facility, welcome center and entertainment space, bedrooms, etc., and expressed satisfaction with the athletes’ village facilities.

On this day, Chairman Bach took a photo with the players who entered the camp on the 15th and had a conversation with the players who went to the restaurant and had a meal.

Chairman Bach said, “When I came to the athletes’ village, I got the impression that the quality of accommodation was very good, and when I talked to the athletes, I was able to confirm that they were very satisfied with the facilities and food.” “I think it is a very good differentiator because it can be the cornerstone of being able to participate in the next Olympic Games.”

He added, “It is proving that this competition is very meaningful, especially in that it further expands the foothold of winter sports in Asia.”

Starting with the soft opening on the 13th, a total of 2,950 athletes from 79 countries are entering the village sequentially from the 15th. 2,600 people will stay at the Gangneung Athletes’ Village, and 350 people will stay at the Jeongseon High1 Athletes’ Village, which opens on the 18th. After acclimating to the athletes’ village, the athletes will participate in the opening ceremony held on the 19th.

This competition will be held in Gangneung, Pyeongchang, Jeongseon, and Hoengseong for a total of 14 days from the 19th to February 1st under the slogan ‘We shine when we are together.’ The dreams and passion of youth athletes from around the world will be showcased with 81 medals up for grabs in a total of 7 competitions (15 sports), including ice and snow competitions.
