Families with children in Italy will see updated payments and income thresholds for the Assegno Unico, a universal child allowance, starting in February 2026, according to announcements from the National Social Security Institute (INPS) on February 2, 2026.
The adjustments, reflecting a 1.4% increase based on the 2025 Italian National Institute of Statistics (ISTAT) inflation rate, impact both the base amounts of the benefit and the income thresholds used to determine eligibility and payment levels. The changes will be applied retroactively to January 2026, with adjustments appearing in the March 2026 payments, INPS confirmed in circular n. 7, released January 30, 2026.
For families already receiving the Assegno Unico with an approved application, no new application is required for 2026, unless their previous application was revoked, cancelled, or denied. The benefit will be automatically renewed and adjusted.
The updated income threshold for the 2026 Assegno Unico is €46,582.71, an increase from the €45,939.56 threshold in 2025. This higher threshold means more families will qualify for the full benefit amount. The base amount of the allowance will range from a minimum of €58.30 to a maximum of €203.80 per month, depending on the family’s ISEE (Equivalent Economic Situation Indicator) value.
Several key supplemental payments remain in place. Families with a child under one year old will receive a 50% increase to their monthly Assegno Unico payment, calculated based on the 2026 ISEE thresholds. This increase is applicable until the child’s first birthday.
Families with at least three children and an ISEE value at or below the maximum threshold (€46,582.71) will receive a 50% increase to the Assegno Unico for each child between the ages of one and three. A fixed monthly supplement of €150 will continue to be provided to families with four or more children, regardless of their age or the base allowance amount.
The INPS emphasized the importance of having a valid ISEE declaration by March 2026 to receive the full benefit amount. Families without a valid ISEE will receive the minimum allowance. The ISEE can be obtained quickly through the pre-filled online portal or the INPS Mobile app. Families who submit their Dichiarazione Sostitutiva Unica (DSU) by June 30, 2026, will be eligible for retroactive payments dating back to March 2026.
The updated amounts will be reflected in payments beginning in February 2026, with January adjustments paid out in March 2026, according to INPS.
