Rivian has officially introduced its 2027 R1T and R1S lineup, bringing a significant interior upgrade, reorganized trim tiers, and a new paint option to the electric vehicles. The R1S finally offers optional second-row captain’s chairs, while the overall nomenclature shifts away from motor counts to align with the newer R2 platform structure.
Trims Reorganized Around Lifestyle Choices
According to Rivian Trackr, the automotive manufacturer has reorganized the R1 trim structure to abandon the previous motor-count naming convention. The lineup now mirrors the architecture of the upcoming R2. Buyers are no longer asked to choose based strictly on how many motors sit beneath the sheet metal. Instead, the focus shifts to how the vehicle fits a buyer’s lifestyle.
Base pricing remains steady at $79,990 for the R1T and $83,990 for the R1S. Ordering opened immediately alongside the announcement, with deliveries commencing concurrently.
The revised trim hierarchy breaks down as follows:
- Premium: Replaces the old Dual configuration, corresponding to what was previously sold as Dual Large. It is rated at up to 329 miles of range on both body styles when equipped with 22-inch wheels. An optional Long Range battery variant pushes the EPA-estimated range up to 410 miles on the R1S and up to 420 miles on the R1T.
- Performance: Replaces the former Tri configuration. It utilizes a three-motor setup generating 850 horsepower and 1,103 lb-ft of torque, yielding a 0-60 mph time of 2.9 seconds and an EPA-estimated range of 371 miles, as noted by TopSpeed.
- Quad: Retains its name at the apex of the lineup. As the halo configuration, it delivers 1,025 horsepower and 1,198 lb-ft of torque, capable of a 2.5-second 0-60 mph run using Launch Mode on the R1T, with an EPA range of up to 374 miles.
The R1S Interior Gains Second-Row Captain’s Chairs
As TopSpeed highlights, second-row captain’s chairs rank as Rivian’s most-requested interior feature to date. The 2027 R1S delivers this configuration as an option starting at $4,000 for Premium models and $1,500 for Performance and Quad trims.
The six-seat layout incorporates a wide center pass-through. This opening allows long items like skis and surfboards to slide straight through the cabin while all six occupants remain seated. Crucially, the pass-through grants unhindered access to the third row without requiring users to fold or adjust second-row seats—a practical benefit when child safety seats are anchored in place. Each captain’s chair features an integrated armrest that stows flush, a fold-down push-to-release cup holder, and full heating and car-seat tie-down compatibility.
Standard R1T Wheels and Esker Silver Paint
Beyond cabin adjustments, the R1T gains a 20-inch Adventure All-Season wheel and tire package as standard equipment on Premium models. According to Rivian Trackr, this Goodyear tire combination balances off-road tread capability with low rolling resistance to minimize the range penalty typically associated with aggressive off-road tires.
Simultaneously, a new liquid-metal finish named Esker Silver replaces LA Silver as the no-cost, included paint option across both the R1T and R1S. Originally debuted on the R2, Esker Silver features fine metallic flakes designed to create visual depth and unify the color palettes across Rivian’s vehicle generations.
