A thrombosis can not only arise from a growing tumor; blood clots themselves can also be an indication of early cancer.

There is a proven connection between cancer and thrombosis Thrombosis Action Alliance. Blood clots or thrombosis are among the most common and dangerous complications for cancer patients, although not every cancer increases the risk of venous thrombosis to the same extent. However, blood clots not only occur more often in the case of a tumor, a thrombosis can even indicate that cancer is developing, even at an early stage.

Warning signs of cancer: Where in the body venous thrombosis can occur and what the symptoms are

Thrombosis or blood clots can occur for various reasons, for example after prolonged bed rest, as a result of arteriosclerosis, after an operation, due to congenital thrombophilia or even with the onset of cancer. The resulting blood clot, which obstructs blood flow, can cause the following symptoms:

    • Cramp-like pain, similar to a sore muscle
    • Pressure on the affected area increases the pain
    • Shiny blue-reddish skin in the affected area with prominent veins
    • swelling

Thrombosis can occur in different areas of the body. Venous thrombosis (phlebothrombosis) is a particular sign of early cancer, for example:

    • in the leg,
    • in your arms,
    • in the shoulder girdle,
    • in the pool,
    • in the portal vein,
    • in the brain.

If there is an as yet undetected tumor behind the thrombosis, it becomes noticeable on average within twelve months of the thrombosis Studies show.

Cancers change the composition of the blood

According to the German Society for Angiology – Society for Vascular Medicine e. v., tumor cells secrete substances that stimulate the clotting factors and thus increase the risk of thrombosis. The type of cancer also has a significant influence on the frequency of thrombosis. Patients have a significantly increased risk of thrombosis at the beginning and in the course of lung cancer, pancreatic cancer, ovarian cancer, stomach cancer, colon cancer or leukemia.
