At the recent special equipment exhibition in Abu Dhabi,Mercedes-Benz Division Special Trucks unveiled a range of Arocs and Zetros models designed specifically for military operations. These robust vehicles are engineered to withstand the challenges of diverse terrains and limited infrastructure.
Zetros: Built for Unpredictable Environments
The Zetros, a versatile off-road truck, boasts a unique design with the engine compartment and driver’s cab positioned behind the front axle. This configuration results in a lower overall height, considerably reduced vibration for personnel and cargo, enhanced driving safety, and improved speed on uneven terrain.
“The driver’s cabin does not have to be raised to access the engine room, allowing the crew to remain inside the vehicle and maintain the use of interaction systems and other essential vehicle functions,”
all Zetros models are powered by a robust OM 460 six-cylinder diesel engine, capable of delivering up to 510 hp and 2300 Nm of torque with a displacement of 12.8 liters. This powerful engine is paired with an Allison 16-speed automatic transmission featuring manual mode,a two-speed transfer box,and lockable differential blockers.
The Zetros truck can transport up to 120 tonnes of heavy cargo, with a higher capacity of 70 tonnes when configured with a 6×6 wheel formula.
Arocs: power and Versatility for Heavy lifting
The Arocs 6×6 is designed for even heavier hauling, capable of transporting tanks, specialized equipment, or other substantial cargo. It utilizes the same powerful 12.8-liter OM 460 six-cylinder diesel engine, generating 421 hp, mated to an Allison 12-speed automated transmission with a manual mode.
Equipped with a robust winch, the Arocs can effectively move, load, and unload heavy machinery. Specialized features include roof hatches, camouflage lighting to minimize nighttime visibility, and a tire pressure control system with stepless pressure adjustment for enhanced off-road capability.
These military-grade trucks demonstrate Mercedes-Benz’s commitment to developing innovative and reliable vehicles for demanding applications. With their remarkable performance, durability, and advanced features, the Arocs and Zetros provide valuable support for military operations worldwide.

Mercedes-Benz Unveils Military-Grade trucks: Interview wiht Dr. Hans Muller
Mercedes-Benz Division Special Trucks recently unveiled a range of arocs and Zetros models designed specifically for military operations at the recent special equipment exhibition in abu Dhabi. These robust vehicles are engineered to withstand the challenges of diverse terrains and limited infrastructure. Archyde spoke with Dr. Hans Muller, Head of Product Advancement for Military Vehicles at Mercedes-benz, to learn more about these impressive machines.
Zetros: Built for Unpredictable Environments
Archyde: Dr. Muller, the Zetros boasts a unique design with the engine compartment behind the front axle. Can you explain the rationale behind this configuration?
Dr. Muller: Absolutely. Placing the engine compartment behind the front axle, a configuration known as a central cabin, offers several distinct advantages for military operations. Firstly, it significantly reduces the overall height of the vehicle, which is crucial for navigating tight spaces and low-hanging obstacles.Secondly, it minimizes vibrations experienced by both personnel and cargo, enhancing comfort and operational effectiveness. Thirdly, it improves driving safety by lowering the vehicle’s center of gravity, contributing to greater stability, especially on uneven terrain.
another noteworthy benefit is the ease of maintenance. The driver’s cabin doesn’t need to be raised to access the engine room, allowing the crew to remain inside the vehicle and maintain the use of interaction systems and essential vehicle functions, even in challenging environments.
Archyde: What kind of powertrain options are available for the Zetros?
Dr. Muller: All Zetros models are powered by our robust OM 460 six-cylinder diesel engine. This powerhouse delivers up to 510 hp and 2300 Nm of torque with a displacement of 12.8 liters. It’s paired with an allison 16-speed automatic transmission featuring manual mode, a two-speed transfer box, and lockable differential blockers, ensuring remarkable performance across various terrains.
Archyde: Impressive! Can you tell us about the Zetros’s payload capacity?
Dr.Muller: The Zetros truck can transport up to 120 tonnes of heavy cargo. When configured with a 6×6 wheel formula, it boasts an impressive capacity of 70 tonnes.
Arocs: Power and Versatility for Heavy Lifting
Archyde: Moving on to the Arocs 6×6, what makes it particularly suitable for military applications?
Dr. Muller: The Arocs 6×6 is designed for heavy hauling, capable of transporting tanks, specialized equipment,or other substantial cargo. like the Zetros, it utilizes the powerful 12.8-liter OM 460 six-cylinder diesel engine, generating 421 hp, mated to an Allison 12-speed automated transmission with manual mode. However, the Arocs 6×6 takes it a step further with features like a robust winch, enabling effective movement, loading, and unloading of heavy machinery.
Archyde: I see. Are there any unique features that enhance its functionality in challenging environments?
Dr. Muller: Absolutely. The Arocs 6×6 is equipped with specialized features tailored for demanding military operations. These include roof hatches for personnel access, camouflage lighting to minimize nighttime visibility, and a tire pressure control system with stepless pressure adjustment for enhanced off-road capability.
Archyde: These are impressive features. Looking ahead, what are Mercedes-Benz’s plans for further developing military-grade vehicles?
Dr. Muller: At Mercedes-Benz, innovation is at the heart of everything we do. We are continuously exploring new technologies and advancements to enhance the capabilities of our military vehicles. Our focus remains on developing vehicles that are not only robust and reliable but also technologically advanced, meeting the evolving needs of our military customers worldwide. We believe these vehicles represent the future of military mobility, combining cutting-edge engineering with a commitment to exceptional performance and reliability.
Archyde: Thank you,Dr. Muller, for sharing your insights. These trucks certainly demonstrate Mercedes-Benz’s commitment to providing innovative solutions for demanding applications.
