29 attempts to escape during the execution of prisoners from prisons occurred across Austria from 2021 to 2022, and 21 officers were injured during this period. This is shown by the answer to a parliamentary FPÖ question by Justice Minister Alma Zadić (Greens). Most recently, an imprisoned suspected supporter of the terrorist militia “Islamic State” (IS) fled during a hospital appointment in Vienna.
In November there was even a whole series of escapes in Lower Austria and Vienna. In this context, the FPÖ spoke of “worrying figures” and called for a personnel offensive for the prisons on Tuesday. According to MP Christian Lausch, all levers must be pulled to ensure that the necessary staffing levels are reached.
The 19-year-old suspected IS sympathizer, who escaped more than a week ago, was arrested a day later in Vienna-Floridsdorf, and four of the inmates who fled to Vienna and Lower Austria in November are also back in custody. A 35-year-old inmate at Stein Prison, however, is still on the run.
