The management of the Russian mapping service 2GIS asked employees to collect data on establishments for LGBTQ people into a register. This was reported by the publication “Important Stories”, which published a letter from the management of 2GIS.
The letter asks employees to check the information provided in the company’s products due to the fact that the Supreme Court declared “extremist” and banned the “LGBT movement” in the Russian Federation.
“Our product could contain establishments of this kind (perhaps not explicitly)… We cannot catch such establishments centrally, so it is important that a review is carried out locally. As a rule, they are presented in the headings “Nightclubs”, “Bars”. While our lawyers are figuring out what to do correctly with the establishment cards, you can record their names in the registry,” the letter says.
Employees were also asked to check establishment cards and write complaints if they notice “compromising photos/reviews.” The management of 2GIS, it follows from the letter, asked to “allocate a resource for the task in the near future.”
A 2GIS employee who received the letter told Important Stories that he tried to contact the club owners on Telegram to warn them about the data collection.
Meduza contacted 2GIS for comment, but the company did not respond at the time of publication.
On November 30, the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation, following a lawsuit from the Ministry of Justice, declared it “extremist” and banned the “international LGBT movement” in Russia.
