"2STV's Sophia Thiam Honored with Black Excellence Award at Houston's Africa Day Celebration"

Africa Day: Sophia Thiam of 2stv honored in the United States

Mayor Sylvester Turner, members of the Houston City Council and members of the African diplomatic corps in the United States joined the local community to celebrate Africa Day in Houston. The sixth annual celebration was held at the George R. Brown Convention Center, Concourse C, on Friday, May 19, 2023 at 5 p.m.

This year, Sophia Thiam from 2s TV was among the guests. On this occasion, Senator Ron Reynolds presented her with the ”black Excellence Award” for being one of the first young presenters of 2sTV who achieved success in her international career. Sophia also had to meet the other members of the government, in particular MP Sheila Jackson-Lee, Mazda Demon, the Mayor’s International Affairs Advisor and the City Commissioner.

Africa Day, also known as African Unity Day, is celebrated annually on May 25. It recalls the founding of the Organization of African Unity (OAU), ancestor of the African Union (AU), on May 25, 1963.

On this occasion, the city of Houston welcomed Her Excellency Hilda Suka-Mafudze, the Permanent Representative of the African Union to the United States, as well as nearly 20 ambassadors from African countries.
The event, hosted annually by Mayor Sylvester Turner, showcases the diversity of the nation’s most populous city. People from all walks of life are invited to join the African community for the time to consider opportunities for commercial exchanges and also to revisit African cultural diversity.
