Proximity sensors are becoming more compact than ever. Rohm introduced the RPR-0720, a VCSEL diode sensor measuring just 2x1x0.55mm! This miniaturization facilitates its use in portable devices such as wireless headsets, watches, video game controllers and virtual reality headsets, but also in office automation (paper detection in printers and copiers) or even for the detection of cartridge or liquid in electronic cigarettes.
The RPR-0720 includes a VCSEL diode for transmitting and a photodiode for receiving. Operating over a wide voltage range of 2.7 to 4.5V, it can be powered directly by a Li-ion battery without voltage riser mounting, and communicates via an I²C serial port. Its range reaches 15mm.
