35 migrants rescued in the Strait of Pas-de-Calais

Their boat in difficulty was taken care of and brought back to the port of Calais.

A boat with 35 migrants on board was rescued on Monday when it was in difficulty, said the maritime prefecture of the Channel and the North Sea in a press release.

The Flamant public service patrol boat from the French Navy was deployed to come to their aid. The boat picked up all the victims before taking them to the port of Calais. They were then taken care of by firefighters and border police.

Crossing attempts on the rise

In its press release, the maritime prefecture of the Channel and the North Sea recalls the “difficult” weather conditions in the sector which make crossing attempts dangerous. Nearly 41 migrants were already rescued last Saturday in the same Strait of Pas-de-Calais.

Recently, the number of attempts to cross the English Channel has increased significantly. More than 20,000 people attempted to cross the English Channel in the first half of 2022, a figure up 68% compared to the previous year at the same period.
