Miami. The US Coast Guard is searching for 39 people missing from a boat that capsized off the Florida coast. A helper alerted the Coast Guard on Tuesday after rescuing a man clinging to the wrecked boat about 70 kilometers east of Fort Pierce, she said. The 39 people who were being searched for are said to have been missing for several days. The coast guard suspects that the boat was steered by people smugglers.
The rescued man stated that his group left Bimini Island in the Bahamas on Saturday evening (local time). The boat capsized in bad weather. The occupants were not wearing life jackets.
