HBO has scheduled the premiere of its new Harry Potter series for December 25, 2026, beginning with an adaptation of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. The production is designed as a comprehensive remake of J.K. Rowling’s original novels, with the network planning a dedicated season for each book in the series.
Early footage released in March indicates a shift toward a more literal interpretation of the source material compared to the previous Warner Bros. Film adaptations. The trailer highlights specific narrative details omitted from the movies, including scenes depicting Aunt Petunia cutting Harry’s hair in an attempt to force a conventional appearance and extended sequences of bullying by Harry’s cousin, Dudley, prior to his enrollment at Hogwarts.
Narrative Expansions and Character Development
The series intends to allocate more screen time to the domestic life of Harry Potter with the Dursley family. While the films touched upon this relationship, the original text provides a more detailed perspective on the Dursleys’ rejection of magic and the psychological environment of Harry’s early childhood, including narrative elements presented from the viewpoint of Uncle Vernon.

Production plans also include a more detailed exploration of the origins of Lord Voldemort. The series is expected to expand on the history of Tom Riddle, specifically focusing on the abandonment by his father and the death of his mother, providing a deeper context for the character’s descent into the dark arts.
Similar expansions are anticipated for the character of Severus Snape, specifically regarding his history and the circumstances surrounding his identity as the “Half-Blood Prince.” the series is expected to provide a more comprehensive depiction of the attack at Godric’s Hollow, the event that resulted in the deaths of James and Lily Potter.
Introduction of Previously Omitted Figures
The expanded format of the television series allows for the inclusion of characters who did not appear in the film franchise. These include the poltergeist Peeves, Ariana Dumbledore, and Teddy Lupin.
HBO has confirmed that work on the second season is already underway, proceeding in parallel with the finalization of the first season’s production.
