Weinviertel hike around Falkenstein

We start north, just before the Austrian-Czech border and accompany you through beautiful vineyards past cellar alleys. Welcome to Falkenstein, the picturesque wine town in the largest wine-growing region in Austria. Here you always walk lightly through the wine region and have the next beautiful view of endless vineyard landscapes behind every new fork. We find the 3 Sisters Trail particularly exciting here. The special thing about this hiking route: It connects three cellar alleys that couldn’t be more completely different. From the sparkling wine capital of Lower Austria and sparkling wine stronghold Poysdorf, you continue to the romantic Falkenstein and finally reach the historically pretty Herrnbaumgarten. Three wine towns like three sisters, who lay the picturesque vineyard slopes and idyllic cellar alleys at your feet in their own unique ways. Tip for on the go: Be sure to stop off at wine taverns and self-service cellars. Or you can create carefree outdoor moments with a picnic yourself.

Information about the 3 Sisters Trail:

  • Start: Vino Versum/Weinmarkt in Poysdorf
  • Route: 23.71 km (total, of course you can also just visit one path or one cellar alley)
  • Length of time: 7 h
  • Difficulty level: medium
  • Highlight: View of the Falkenstein castle ruins
  • Help with your route planning

Explore the Vienna Alps

A bit more adventurous and higher, it’s 300 kilometers, 11,000 meters in altitude and countless views down below. In short: 19 stages from the Vienna Alps. So if you have a lot of fat in your calves and don’t shy away from long hikes, this piece of extremely hilly earth will make you happy in no time. Numerous hiking trails lead from the hills of the Buckligen Welt over the green swaths of the Wechselkamm, into the wooded cultural world of Semmering and up to the highest peaks in the country, Rax and Schneeberg. A particularly beautiful path that we recommend to you: the hiking tour from Prein, Raxalpenhof to the Habsburg House. On the 11th stage of the route along the Vienna Alps, the landscape becomes a little more alpine, so bring your fitness and concentration, please! Where initially fruit tree meadows and farms cross your feet, a short time later you continue through mountain forests up to the rocky high plateau of the Rax. The reward: the panoramic view from the refuge.

Information about the hiking tour from the Raxalpenhof to the Habsburg House:

  • Start: Prein, Wanderhotel Raxalpenhof
  • Route: 11,89 km
  • Length of time: 5 h
  • Difficulty level: difficult

Hikes and torrents around the Ötscher

The region around the Ötscher in the southwest is wild and indecisive – in the most positive sense. The hiking trails in this part of Lower Austria are characterized by untamed nature, impressive gorges, thundering waterfalls, rough mountain ridges and green alpine meadows that make you want more every step of the way. And you get this extra more often on a very special route. Because if you want to get a taste of three different mountain peaks, the alpine tour from Hochkar via Dürrenstein to Ötscher is just the thing for you. Here you go along lonely single trails, mostly above the tree line, to breathtaking mountain panoramas. A particularly beautiful tour through the Ötschergräben – the Grand Canyon of Austria – takes you from the Ötscher-Tormäuer nature park entrance to Mitterbach. Shaped by the forces of the Ötscherbach, you hike along rugged rocks and thundering waterfalls through a unique gorge system. After you pass the romantic Erlaufstausee, your destination is Mitterbach train station.

Information about the hiking tour from the nature park entrance to Mitterbach

  • Start: Ötscher-Basis Nature Park Center in Wienerbruck/Ötscher-Tormäuer Nature Park Entrance
  • Route: 11,18 km
  • Length of time: 3:45 h
  • Difficulty level: medium
  • Highlight: the gorge world of the Ötschergräben
