Four Meriden, Connecticut residents found themselves in handcuffs early Sunday morning after local law enforcement busted an illegal street racing gathering on Long Island.
The 1:10 AM Bust on Express Drive North
Four Connecticut residents were arrested on Sunday, Sept. 15, 2026, after police said they were involved in illegal street racing on Long Island over the weekend, according to local reporting from NBC Connecticut. Officers attached to the Suffolk County, New York, Police Department’s Street Takeover Task Force responded to Express Drive North in Yaphank at approximately 1:10 a.m. Sunday.
The deployment followed a 911 call reporting a large, disruptive gathering of vehicles taking over the roadway. When patrol units arrived at the scene, they observed at least two vehicles actively racing before the crowd attempted to scatter.
Seizing the Machinery of Illegal Racing
While many of the participants managed to disperse into the early morning darkness, Suffolk County officers intercepted a vehicle combination hauling specialized equipment. According to WFSB, officers successfully stopped a truck towing a trailer that carried a dedicated race car.
All four occupants of the truck, every single one hailing from Meriden, Connecticut, were taken into custody at the scene. Authorities immediately impounded the truck, the trailer, and the race car involved in the transport, effectively cutting off the logistics operation behind the street racing display.
A Regional Warning to Out-of-State Drivers
Law enforcement officials have made it clear that traveling across state lines does not offer immunity from local task forces. Suffolk County police addressed the incident directly via social media:
“We welcome visitors to Suffolk County. But if your plans include illegal street racing, you may want to reconsider the trip. Our Street Takeover Task Force will continue targeting this dangerous activity — no matter where those involved call home.”
As of Sunday afternoon, the Suffolk County Police Department had not immediately released specific details regarding the exact criminal charges facing the four Meriden residents. The investigation remains active as authorities review evidence from the weekend operation.
