4 x 100 meter relay: Silver awarded retrospectively to Canadians

A dramatic change in the world of athletics: due to a case of doping within its 4 x 100 meters relay team, the British team was stripped of the silver medal it had obtained during of the Tokyo Olympics. The Canadians, who had won the bronze, are thus declared vice-champions of the event.

Traces of substances prohibited at the Games (Enobosarm and S-23) have been detected in two samples from British sprinter CJ Ujah, according to a decision by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) and reported by the specialized media Eurosports.

“I accept this decision rendered by the CAS today [vendredi] with sadness, Ujah said in a statement. I would like to make it clear that I unknowingly consumed a contaminated supplement, which explains why I violated an anti-doping rule at the Tokyo Games.

“I sincerely regret that I inadvertently caused the loss of the British team’s silver medals.”

In addition to Ujah, Zharnel Hughes, Richard Kilty and Nethaneel Mitchell-Blake are also stripped of their medals.

By virtue of this disqualification, the Canadian team moved up one step on the podium and China was awarded a retrospective bronze medal.

“I would like to apologize to my teammates, their families and our support teams for the impact this has had on them. I am sorry that this situation caused the loss of fully deserved medals for my teammates,” continued Ujah.

“I will regret it for the rest of my life.”
