However, when the overweight stage is included, it is estimated that more than half of people worldwide are overweight.
To be considered obese, a person has a body mass index (BMI) above 30 kg/m². To be classified as overweight, the BMI must be above 25 kg/m². To calculate a person, just divide the weight, in kilograms, by the square of the height, in meters.
The report also revealed that childhood obesity could more than double by 2035, compared to 2020 data. In addition, the authors found that the increase in the disease should be greater in low- and middle-income countries in Asia and Africa.
The president of the World Obesity Federation, Louise Baur, argues that public policy makers need to act as soon as possible to prevent the situation from getting worse.
“It is particularly concerning to see obesity rates rising more rapidly among children and adolescents. Governments and policymakers around the world need to do everything they can to avoid passing the health, social and economic costs on to the younger generation,” she said in a statement.
The document will be presented to UN policymakers and states next week.
