The ChaffinchThe chaffinch is a small passerine bird about 18 cm long characterized by its blue-gray helmet, its salmon-like cheeks and chest, and its brown back. The female has the same markings, but has duller colors than the male. Its song begins with very detached notes whose rhythm accelerates very quickly with successive trills. The Chaffinch (Fringilla coelebs) © CA, Bing image creatorThe Chaffinch is common throughout the Eurasian continent, as well as in North Africa. This species, present all year round in France, is largely forested, is very common and not threatened, which is partly explained by its omnivorous diet. If it is fond of insects in the summer, it mainly eats seeds during the inter-nuptial period. The blue tit

The blue tit is a small passerine bird measuring around 11 cm, the only one to display pretty yellow (on the belly) and blue (on the top of the skull – or crown -, wings and tail) colors. In this species of birds, the male and female are almost identical. Their song, very high, is difficult to recognize because it has many variations.

The blue tit is present throughout Europe, particularly in the Chênaies. In France, it is found throughout the country. In the summer, it is a lover of insects and small invertebrates but, like the finch, it prefers seeds and flowers and buds in the off-season.

The American Goldfinch

The European Goldfinch (Carduelis carduelis) is a superb bird that lives up to its name! This finch, measuring around fifteen centimeters, is very easily recognizable thanks to its blood-red face and its lemon-yellow portion of the wing. The rest of its head is black and white, and its body is a lovely light brown. Apart from a few elements (shorter tail, slightly different beak shape), male and female are identical. Their singing, harmonious and very characteristic with rolling notes and lots of acceleration: real castafiores!

You can come across the American Goldfinch at forest edges, clearings and regeneration. It is present throughout France, and throughout Eurasia along the Mediterranean, and in the Middle East. Although this charming bird decorates its nest with small invertebrates and feeds its young, it itself is a granivore all year round.

Le Verdier d’Europe

The European Greenfinch (Chloris chloris) is a bird of around fifteen centimeters, but well built. Its plumage is yellow-green, tinged with gray. The bottom of its wings and tail are blackish. It is also distinguished by a thick, conical beak. The female’s colors are equally distributed, but duller than those of the male. The song of the Verdier is characterized by a long note, interrupted by a rapid succession of small rolling notes.

The distribution area of the European Greenfinch is wide, from Europe to North Africa, including the Middle East. He is a fan of open and semi-open environments such as wooded countryside, orchards or even… gardens.

The redbreast

The Robin (Erithacus rubecula) is one of the easiest to recognize regulars in our gardens. With a length of approximately 14 cm, this plump bird is distinguished by its olive-brown back and wings, which contrast with its throat and face, a beautiful orange color. Males and females have exactly the same plumage. Its song is a succession of small energetic cries in more or less rapid stacatto.

The robin appreciates forest environments. It is found mainly in Western Europe and North Africa. During the summer, it is mainly insectivorous and feeds on small invertebrates. The rest of the year, it turns to berries and fruits for food.

The list is far from exhaustive, but it is already enough if you are not used to looking at these little creatures very closely. All that remains is to keep your eyes and ears open to enjoy your neighbors. For cat owners, caution is required: our pretty balls of fur are also real terrors in gardens, responsible for a decline in biodiversity among small birds!
