5 Ways to Transfer Files When AirDrop Not Working

2024-03-22 21:33:00

When you need to quickly transfer a file to one or more nearby Apple devices, AirDrop is usually the easiest solution. However, it can happen that a problem arises without explanation.

For these situations, here are the 5 best alternatives.

AirDrop Troubleshooting

If AirDrop isn’t working between your two Apple devices, try troubleshooting it.

To get started, make sure both devices have Bluetooth and Wi-Fi turned on and are connected to the same Wi-Fi network.

If so, turn Wi-Fi and Bluetooth off and on on both devices, then try AirDrop again.

Email transfer

If the files are not too large, you can send them as a compressed email attachment.

Create a folder in the Files app on your iPhone or iPad, move the files you want to transfer into it, then tap and hold the folder or file to compress it. On Mac, right-click on the folder then choose “Compress Folder”.

This will generate a .zip file compatible with various devices and decompressable using either software. Then send it by email.

Transfer via iCloud

Open the Files app on your iOS or iPadOS device, or iCloud Drive on Mac. Create a folder there in which you will add the items to transfer. Right-click (or control-click) the folder, then select “Share.”

You can then add people who will have access to the contents of the folder without accessing your other iCloud items.

Transfer via third-party cloud services

Similar to transferring via iCloud, use free or paid cloud services such as Box, Dropbox, Sync.com or WeTransfer.

Move the files to a folder on your cloud service of choice, then send the folder through the tools provided by the service.

Transfer via USB sticks

If the files are too large to email or store in a cloud, use a good old USB flash drive or portable external SSD drive.

This tip works especially well if you want to transfer files from one computer to another, rather than to mobile devices. That said, there are now multi-connector USB keys that are also compatible with an Apple or Android device.

Indeed, for transfers from a smartphone, a USB key or portable SSD drive equipped with USB-C sockets will allow any smartphone or tablet to easily receive the elements you wish to share. Please note that this possibility has only been allowed since the arrival of the iPhone 15, since previous models were equipped with a Lightning port.
