555th Anniversary Celebration of Franchimont: A Vibrant Medieval Fair and Historic March in Theux

It was not yet 9 a.m. this Saturday, September 23, when the procession, leaving Marché, entered the center of Theux via the aptly named rue des 600 Franchimontois. For this 9th edition of the march which commemorates the 555th anniversary of this brave but vain attempt to counter Charles the Bold (the people of Franchimont were almost all massacred), there were a thousand costumed walkers who took the road in the direction of Cork.

We can say that the enthusiasm was particularly high this year: registrations, limited to 1000 places, were already full at the beginning of September. “It’s a year of Medieval Fair, people are in a dynamic. That’s what most certainly plays a role,” believes Alexandre Lodez, president of the Theux tourist office (which coordinates the event) and alderman of the Culture.

After a stop at Place du Perron, where instructions were given to them in order to reach the Cité ardente in complete safety, the participants set off again in the direction of Banneux and Sprimont. “Be careful, have fun and long live Theutois folklore,” concluded Mayor Pierre Lemarchand. It was only at the end of the day that they completed the 35 km that separate them from the famous Bueren mountain, the last obstacle on their route. They can therefore finally breathe and celebrate under the marquee exceptionally installed near the foothills of the citadel, the Helmo Sainte-Croix school, which welcomed them until now, being under construction. Before returning to Theux by bus.

The next meeting has already been made in 5 years.
