Emergency services responded to a serious multi-vehicle crash on the Seletar Expressway toward the Central Expressway, near the Woodlands Avenue 12 exit. The collision involved a car and three motorcycles, prompting authorities to rush multiple casualties to the hospital.
The August 4 Collision on the Seletar Expressway
The authorities were alerted to the accident on the SLE towards the CTE, near the Woodlands Avenue 12 exit, at around 7.50am on Aug 4. The 58-year-old motorcyclist had been taken unconscious to hospital after the accident. Two other male motorcyclists and a male pillion rider, aged between 24 and 31, were taken conscious to hospital. Police investigations are ongoing.
Photos of the incident show two motorcyclists lying on the road in the middle of three lanes surrounded by at least four people. A person is also seen helping to direct traffic.
Broader Patterns in Singapore Traffic Safety
The August collision unfolds against a troubling backdrop for road safety in Singapore. According to the Traffic Police annual report, road traffic fatalities hit a 10-year high of 149 in 2025, as compared with 141 in 2016. In their annual report on road traffic statistics, the Traffic Police said that while motorcycles made up only about 15 per cent of Singapore’s total vehicle population in 2025, motorcyclists and pillion riders were involved in 54.8 per cent of all traffic accidents and accounted for 53 per cent of deaths.
Casuality Trends Across Recent Years
A closer look at the figures reveals shifting trends in motorcycle-related incidents on the road network. The number of accidents involving motorcyclists jumped from 3,973 cases in 2024 to 4,227 cases in 2025. The number of motorcyclist and pillion rider casualties increased from 4,510 in 2024 to 4,844 in 2025.
However, the number of fatal accidents involving motorcyclists dropped from 87 cases in 2024 to 79 cases in 2025. The number of motorcyclist and pillion rider deaths also decreased, falling from 85 in 2024 to 79 in 2025.
Recent Expressway Tragedies
The August 4 incident follows another fatal expressway crash weeks earlier. On July 29, a 24-year-old motorcyclist died in an accident with a trailer on the Seletar Expressway (SLE) on Wednesday (July 29).
A video posted by Facebook user Farizatul Firdaus on Wednesday shows a navy blue police tent on the expressway. Debris and an overturned motorcycle lay on the road further down. The two left-most lanes of the expressway are cordoned off with traffic cones as a group of police officers converge along the road shoulder. The video caption claims that the accident took place near Woodlands Avenue 12.
The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) and police told AsiaOne they were alerted to the accident along SLE towards CTE and TPE at about 9.50am. An SCDF paramedic pronounced the motorcyclist dead at the scene.
Police investigations are ongoing for these incidents.
