During the benefit concert Global Goal, 6.9 billion dollars (more than 6.1 billion euros) was raised on Saturday to reduce the impact of the corona virus on vulnerable and disadvantaged communities. Coldplay, Miley Cyrus, Jennifer Hudson, Usher, Justin Bieber and Shakira performed at the concert.
The two-hour event was hosted by Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson. The show was streamed online and broadcast on TV channels around the world. The money raised was donated by governments, the private sector and foundations.
The proceeds from the benefit event, organized by the international interest group Global Citizen, are used worldwide to achieve a fair distribution of coronavirus treatments and to reduce the (financial) impact of the virus on minorities and people living in extreme poverty.
In May Global Citizen collaborated with Lady Gaga for the benefit concert One World: Together At Home. During the Gaga-curated event, performers from around the world, including Paul McCartney, Bruce Springsteen and Billie Eilish, performed from their homes to raise money for corona relief. Then nearly 120 million euros was raised, the majority of which would be spent on the development of a vaccine.
