Els Encantats and the Catalan Pyrenees
Located within the Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici National Park in the Catalan Pyrenees, the Estany de Sant Maurici is a glacial lake framed by black pine forests and the jagged peaks of Els Encantats. The route typically begins in Espot, where visitors can walk or take authorized off-road taxis toward the lake perimeter.
Regulated Summer Access in the Picos de Europa
The glacial lakes of Enol and Ercina sit inside the Picos de Europa National Park, drawing summer crowds to their surrounding meadows and limestone summits. A straightforward circular route connects both lakes and several viewpoints, making the path accessible for standard hikers. To manage visitor volume during the summer season, authorities regulate vehicle access by operating a mandatory bus service from designated departure points. Swimming remains prohibited throughout the area to safeguard the natural habitat.
Castilla y León and Aragon Mountain Basins
Contained within the Laguna Negra y Circos Glaciares de Urbión Natural Park in Castilla y León, the Laguna Negra is tucked beneath granite walls and dense pine woods. Summer traffic restrictions require motorists to leave vehicles at the Paso de la Serrá parking lot, from where visitors complete the route on foot or via a shuttle bus. Beyond the main lake, hikers can continue upward toward the upper lagoons and the Picos de Urbión.
In Aragon, high-altitude glacial lakes are known as ibones, with the Ibón de Plan located in the Chistau Valley. Reached via a regulated forestry track from Saravillo followed by a 45-minute walk along a clear path, the lake sits enclosed by forest and peaks. Local environmental signage instructs visitors to stay on marked paths to protect the delicate ecosystem surrounding the basin.
Biosphere Reserves of the Cordillera Cantábrica
Positioned inside the Somiedo Natural Park and Biosphere Reserve, the Lago del Valle represents the largest natural lake in the Cordillera Cantábrica. The route originates in the village of Valle de Lago, covering a 12-kilometer round trip without technical obstacles. The trail features alternating exposed and shaded segments across the glacial valley floor.
Border Trails and the Sistema Central
Situated near the French border, the Ibón de Estanés offers an open landscape of mountain meadows rather than an enclosed rock cirque. The standard trail starts from Sansanet on the French side, though longer alternatives exist from Candanchú. Both paths traverse open terrain where hikers regularly spot local alpine fauna, including marmots, under park conservation guidelines.
At the base of the Gredos glacial cirque and beneath the peak of Almanzor in the Sistema Central, the Laguna Grande de Gredos is a central route for mountain hiking in the region.
