Rothes, Scotland (ots/PRNewswire) Sotheby’s has completed the sale of the first of seven decanters, each of which is unique and contains an exquisite 70-year-old single malt whiskey – the oldest bottling from the Glen Grant Distillery.

On Friday, Glen Grant Distillery and Sotheby’s announced the sale of the Glen Grant Devotion Decanter Number One for £81,250 ($101,300). Proceeds from the auction will be donated to the Royal Scottish Forestry Society, which works to preserve forests in the Speyside region. This auction, in collaboration with Sotheby’s, is the first of its kind for the Glen Grant whiskey distillery.

The Glen Grant Devotion is an exquisite 70 year old single malt whiskey inspired by the remarkable reign of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and a tribute to her seventy years of resolute service and lifelong dedication. The Glen Grant Devotion Decanter Number One is the first of seven unique decanters presented in a sculptural masterpiece. Each piece represents a decade of Queen Elizabeth II’s reign and the exquisite maturation of the whiskey and was created by Master Distiller Dennis Malcolm OBE and the distillery team, award-winning artist John Galvin and Hot Glass Master Brodie Nairn from GLASSTORM created by combined forces.

“This record-breaking sale of the oldest whiskey ever bottled by the distillery marks a high point for The Glen Grant,” said Samantha Leotta, Global Director of Scotch Whiskey at Campari Group. “It is a true testament to the craft and the craftsmanship of all those who have contributed to this historic publication – from the founding of The Glen Grant to the present day. We are very grateful to the successful bidder for this significant contribution to the Royal Scottish Forestry Society for the reforestation and restoration of woodland used in Speyside.”

Speaking on behalf of the Royal Scottish Forestry Society, President Wilma Harper said: “We are delighted with the success of the auction. The funds will be used to create a new native woodland on the Burn adjacent to the Glen Grant Distillery, providing a direct link to James “The Major” Grant’s passion in 1876 to protect the banks of the Back Burn and the We are grateful to The Glen Grant for this support of our Society, of which Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II was a Patron, in our ongoing work to encourage future generations of foresters to pass on their knowledge and craftsmanship to future generations to be able to continue.”

Jonny Fowle, Global Head of Spirits at Sotheby’s, said: “This result catapults The Glen Grant to the highest level of collectability at a price that very few distilleries have achieved before.”

The remaining six decanters will be available for sale in the US and Asia. Prices are available upon request from October 2023.
