7300 students from 160 schools dealt creatively with sustainability

Cultural mediation projects in schools raised awareness as part of the projekteuropa competition: for ecological and social sustainability

Vienna (OTS) – “Sustainable! – shaping tomorrow together” was the motto of the creative competition “projekteuropa”, to which the OeAD, as Austria’s education agency, invited all schools throughout Austria. In the 2022/23 school year, 7,300 students from 160 schools then worked creatively on sustainability. A jury has now selected 65 winners from the 209 submissions and cash prizes totaling 26,500 euros have been awarded. The spectrum of topics and titles ranged from climate gifs, fashion and sustainability, fact and fiction, the future on your plate, green living room, recycling heroes, small things – big change to garbage in space. Pupils developed innovative ideas for the design of a peaceful and sustainable society and used the range of all art disciplines for their artistic projects.

The jury from the fields of education, sustainability as well as art and culture emphasized: “In different art fields and forms of cooperation, the students created works on this year’s main topic and impressively demonstrated their wealth of ideas and their artistic skills. As part of the ambitious and exciting projects, it was possible to show the connections between ecological and social sustainability and to focus in particular on gender and other diversity issues. The creative competition projekteuropa and the award-winning projects show the contribution schools make to anchoring the 2030 Agenda and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the minds of young people by bringing them into contact with the topic and touching them through art in their environment .”

New focus: sustainability and democracy

In the coming school year 2023/24, the OeAD will start the new thematic focus on “Cultural Education, Democracy and Sustainability”. The kick-off event will take place on September 28, 2023 in Vienna. www.oead.at/infoveranstaltung
