A two-euro commemorative coin for 75 years of universal female suffrage in Belgium was unveiled on Wednesday at the House of Representatives in Brussels, in the presence of the president of the assembly, Eliane Tillieux, and the federal Minister of Finance, Vincent. Van Peteghem.
On March 27, 1948, the bill granting pure and simple universal suffrage to women was adopted in the House and on June 26, 1949, the first legislative elections were held in which they could participate.
“The expansion of the right to vote is a crucial subject in the history of Belgium and Europe. Women’s right to vote is an important milestone in the history of gender equality,” underlined Eliane Tillieux. The President of the Chamber recalled that even if Belgium was today well placed on this issue, in particular with a woman at the head of the Chamber and Stéphanie D’Hose at the head of the Senate as well as a former prime minister, Sophie Wilmès, many efforts still needed to be made to achieve equality between men and women in many areas.
“The civil and economic emancipation of women is older than their political emancipation,” recalled Leen Van Molle, professor of social history at KU Leuven.
