On my trip to Istanbul by train, we met Jordanian students in the next compartment. A dispute arose regarding Israel. We were influenced by our great history teacher, who had informed us intensively regarding the crimes of the Nazis (not so common back then), we admired Israel’s achievements in reconstruction and found it outrageous that the Jordanians questioned Israel’s right to exist. Only, they were not Jordanians, but Palestinians whose families had fled Israel in 1948 during the Israeli War of Independence. We weren’t aware of that.
