The 76-year-old woman spent a week in intensive care.

The 76-year-old Ecuadorian woman who revived at her own wake has died after seven days of being in intensive care, after a first erroneous death diagnosis being investigated by the health authorities.

Gilberto Barbera Montoya, the woman’s son, confirmed her death Saturday to The Associated Press. The case drew attention inside and outside the Andean country.

Barbera Montoya said that the doctors at the state hospital where her mother was hospitalized had warned her that “she had no remedy. She died at five o’clock in the afternoon” on Friday, she added.

The Ministry of Health confirmed in a statement that the elderly Bella Montoya died after spending a week in intensive care due to an ischemic stroke.

The health entity assured that Montoya remained under “permanent surveillance”, but did not provide any results on the medical audit carried out on the case.

The surprising event occurred a week ago in Babahoyo, some 208 kilometers southwest of Quito, when it was reported that the veiled woman woke up after five hours of remaining in the coffin.

Her relatives became aware of the event when they heard that the woman was hitting the coffin and as they approached they saw that she was breathing with difficulty, after which she was taken to the hospital.

Barbera Montoya told the AP that he has not received any report from the authorities on the medical audit of what happened and warned that “this is not going to stay like this.”

He added that a sister of the deceased had already formally denounced the incident, seeking “to point out the doctor who… gave her up for dead.”

Now, the deceased – who was a retired nurse – is being held in the same place where the surprising event took place, but there is a problem: Her son Barbera Montoya, 45, assured that he does not have the resources to pay for a vault where the remains of his mother rest, for which he expects support from the authorities.
