Early sales data for Black Friday, or Black Friday, as Americans call it, showed a healthy start to the holiday shopping season, at least online.
Despite previous expectations of a slowdown in retail sales growth in general this year, Adobe announced that Black Friday online sales in the United States reached a record high, amounting to $9.8 billion, an increase of 7.5% on an annual basis.
The analytics company expected that consumers would spend another $10 billion over the weekend, and $12 billion on Cyber Monday, or the Monday designated for announcing price cuts on computers, electronics, and everything related to them.
Globally, online sales reached $70.9 billion, an increase of 8% from last year’s Black Friday, according to Salesforce data, which specializes in corporate sales data.
In the United States, online sales increased by 9% to reach $16.4 billion globally, also according to Salesforce data, and a spokesman for the American company said that the numbers exceeded the company’s expectations.
Adobe said electronics were a major driver of growth this year, with smart watches, televisions and audio equipment among popular purchases. Other best-sellers included toys such as Barbie Fashionista dolls, KidKraft playsets, and game consoles such as PlayStation Five and Xbox, as well as Call of Duty, Modern Warfare and Super Mario Bros. Wonder.
“Footwear, health and beauty, skin care and sporting goods were all high-performing categories this year,” the company added.
The company, which specializes in cloud storage and which calculated online and offline sales from its merchants, said global sales for the day increased 22% year-on-year, reaching a record level of $4.1 billion.
This data comes after a strong performance on Thursday, “Thanksgiving” for sellers, as Adobe estimated that online spending reached a record $5.6 billion, which represented an increase of 5.5% compared to the previous year.
Statistics indicate that online sales represent about one-sixth of shopping operations during the holiday period between Thanksgiving and Cyber Monday.
