On the International Day of Women and Girls in Science (11), Samsung reinforces the importance of gender equality in the fields of science and research

In celebration of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science (11), Solve For Tomorrow, Samsung’s global education and corporate citizenship program, surveyed the number of teachers and students participating in the program in its 9th edition. In total, 888 students from public schools across the country enrolled in the initiative in 2022. Of these, 44 were semifinalists, 26 reached the final and 14 were awarded among the winning teams. Of all nine editions of the program, the 2022 edition was also the highest in terms of the number of awarded teachers: an increase of 133% compared to 2021.

The participation of female teachers has grown over the last few years, both in enrollment and in the following stages, which highlight the semifinalist, finalist and, finally, the winning teams of each edition. In 2017 and 2019, five educators were awarded; in 2018, of the 32 semifinalists, ten took home the award. In the years 2020 and 2021, there were four and six winning teachers, respectively.

“It is very important that more and more girls and women are included in the fields of science and research, and Solve For Tomorrow is an important means for this”, says Anna Karina Pinto, director of Corporate Marketing at Samsung Brazil. “We are talking about an area of activity that has always had a strong presence of the male audience. And when we encourage these students and educators to challenge themselves by creating prototypes with innovative solutions, we show that science is for all genders, ages and races.”

“Diversity matters. Each and everyone has the right to access scientific knowledge and participate in its construction. Furthermore, science only tends to gain from the multiplicity of points of view”, points out Beatriz Cortese, Executive Director of Cenpec, the organization responsible for the general coordination of Solve for Tomorrow Brasil. “For science and technology to help us create a better world, the participation of all of society, without exclusions, is essential, precisely to see what challenges we need to face and what are the possible solutions. To be broad and effective, this look depends on diversity”.
