Farewell to the chip crisis? More and more companies are fleeing to the cloud

For Thomas Schertel, the corona crisis has brought unexpected growing pains: “Our customers have increasingly bought online,” says Schertel, IT manager at the Otto Group’s Witt Group from Weiden in Upper Palatinate. “But the increased business volume has also led to an enormous increase in data.” As a result, the company specializing in the sale of women’s fashion, which operates 22 online shops in ten countries, also had to expand its storage systems last June. However, instead of investing in new hardware, Schertel and his team have invested in the cloud – and have relocated 40 terabytes there, which corresponds to a quarter of the total storage capacity. “The chip crisis was a driver for us to rely on the internet cloud,” says Schertel.
