TikTok Sunscreen Myths Are Winning Attention, Not the Science, Study Finds

Most of TikTok’s sunscreen videos are not anti-sunscreen at all. The problem, according to a PLOS Digital Health study published on June 18, 2026, is that the smaller slice of posts pushing dubious claims appears to travel further once viewers start liking, sharing, and arguing in the comments.

The study’s warning is about attention, not volume

The paper does not support the broad claim that TikTok is flooded with anti-sunscreen content. Instead, it points to a more difficult public-health problem: a minority of contrarian posts can shape the tone of a conversation if they feel provocative enough to trigger reaction. The authors found that only 1.5% of the analyzed videos claimed sunscreen causes harm, while 1.2% argued it blocks health benefits. Yet those claims punched above their weight in engagement.
