Abdellah MouttaquiSecretary General of the National Office for Hydrocarbons and Mines (ONHYM)indicated that Morocco is making efforts to increase its production of cobalt. Currently, the country ranks ninth in the world, with a production of 1,900 tonnes in 2021, from 11 major reserves, Archyde.com news agency reports.
Currently, other cobalt reserves are being explored in the region of Sirou with the Moroccan mining company Managemaccording to the same source. Last month, the company announced have entered into an agreement with Glencore for a refining project at the Build Azzer near Marrakech.
The same source clarifies that most of the world’s cobalt is mined as a by-product of copper or nickel production. But in Morocco, the ore is still distinguished by its high purity, especially in the ore mine, according to the secretary general of theONHYM.
Mainly used in industry, cobalt is found in several economic sectors, including the cement industry and the manufacture of semiconductors.
