Strong earthquake strikes Indonesia

A strong earthquake struck off the western coast of the Indonesian island of Sumatra early on Monday, officials said, and was felt strongly in some areas, including the city of Padang, but there were no immediate reports of injuries or damage.

Indonesia’s Geophysics Agency director Dwikorita Karnawati said the 6.7-magnitude quake occurred at 04:09 local time (21:09 GMT Sunday). He added that the earthquake was not of a force that might lead to a tsunami.

The Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Center had earlier said that a 6.8-magnitude earthquake, with a depth of 40 km, occurred near Kepulawan Batu in Indonesia.

Officials have not yet received any information regarding the damage, but an official said they are still assessing the impact in some remote areas, including Nias Selatan in North Sumatra, where communications are difficult.
