The levees in New Orleans held up. However, Hurricane Ida was too strong for the power grid.
In New Orleans, it is slowly becoming clear what hurricane “Ida” did. The extent of the damage cannot yet be conclusively assessed. But unlike in 2005, when hurricane Katrina claimed more than 1,800 lives and caused property damage of $100 billion, this time the very worst was evidently prevented. This is at least partly thanks to the expansion and strengthening of the dams that were tackled after Katrina.
