A magnitude 6 earthquake recorded off the coast of Ecuador It left around thirty homes and buildings affected, including two medical centers, the Risk Management Service reported on Sunday, without reporting victims.
The epicenter of temblorwhich occurred around 11:28 p.m. local time on Saturday (04:28 GMT on Sunday), was located in the Pacific, 12 km from the coastal city of Esmeraldasto the northwest and capital of the province of the same name (border with Colombia), reported the Geophysical Institute (IG) of Quito.
The natural phenomenon led to several followingshocks with a magnitude of up to 5.1, which lasted until early Sunday morning, the IG added.
The images of the moment of the earthquake were spread on social networks.
Risk Management stated in a statement that Due to the main earthquake in Esmeraldas, 30 houses and other buildings were damagedsuch as two medical centers and the Integrated Security Service ECU911.
He added that it also caused the temporary interruption of electrical service in Esmeraldas and in the nearby Atacames resort.
In one of the recordings, two women practice a dance for the TikTok social network when the earthquake occurs.
The earthquake was felt in another 11 of the country’s 24 provinces, according to the Risk Management portfolio.
President William Lasso reported on Twitter that the governor of Esmeraldas, Tania Obando, activated the provincial Emergency Operations Committee (COE) “to assess damage and future risks.”
The geophysicist indicated that the magnitude 6 earthquake is associated with the contact zone of the Nazca and South American plates, a process that generates the largest tremors in Ecuadorsuch as April 2016.
Six years ago, a 7.8-magnitude earthquake shook the provinces of Manabí and neighboring Esmeraldas, leaving 673 dead and some 6,300 wounded and injured. Losses from this earthquake amounted to more than 3,000 million dollars.
