Omicron’s BA.2 subvariant has become the dominant strain in the United States, according to new data released Tuesday by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
This variant has seen its proportion increase steadily due to its increased transmissibility compared to the original Omicron strain.
The BA.2 subvariant accounted for 54.9% of new COVID-19 cases recorded in the United States for the week ending March 26, according to CDC data.
This data is up from the 39% recorded the previous week and the 27.8% recorded two weeks before.
Early studies suggest that the BA.2 subvariant is approximately 30% more transmissible than Omicron’s original BA.1 strain.
