Almost three months after the start of the war, the first Russian soldier was convicted of war crimes in the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv on Monday. According to the court, Wadym S., a 21-year-old tank soldier from Siberia, shot dead a 62-year-old civilian near Kyiv on February 28. Unsurprisingly, the verdict was for life. “I regret it very much. I did not refuse and I am ready to accept any measures that will be imposed,” said S. before the verdict. The soldier’s lawyer had pleaded for acquittal, citing the emergency of orders. It is unclear whether S. will exercise his right to appeal.
