In “The Life of Brian”, the Monty Pythons brought out very clearly the contributions left to us by the Romans: “The aqueduct, the sewers, the roads, the irrigation, the sanitation, the education, the wine, public baths, law and order.” Mary Beard, 67, a professor of classical studies at Cambridge, adds an additional, critically important element to this list: humor and jokes.
