An Indian restaurant in Baden, Aargau, has a startling principle in place: If a customer doesn’t finish their plate, they’re “amened.” His bill is then increased by 5 francs.
This system concerns above all those who choose the all-you-can-eat buffet of the restaurant, the Casanova. Regularly, customers serve themselves much more than they eat or leave their plate half full to taste another dish, Explain the boss, Sulman Ghauri, at the “Aargauer Zeitung”.
Indian established in Switzerland for 20 years, he notes that in his country of origin many do not have enough to eat. “Food is precious in India, you don’t throw it away,” he sums up.
Customers join
The system with its “fine” of 5 francs has been in place for two years in this popular restaurant. And how do customers react? Good, according to the boss. “Some don’t think it’s that great. But 90% think it is positive that we are doing something about food waste,” says Sulman Ghauri.
The restaurateur says, however, that he prefers prevention to repression. So far he has never inflicted these 5 francs, but has sometimes distributed warnings. However, he seems ready to take action if he should come across a repeat offender. “I think our concept is good and I fully support it,” he concludes.
