Sean Monahan looked very comfortable alongside Kirby Dach last night

Looks like I’m still on a high after the Montreal Canadiens win over the Toronto Leafs. I didn’t necessarily expect the club to win, but I even less expected it to give us a show of this quality.

Because we are going to tell each other… Last night’s match was quite a thing. It’s been a long time since we’ve experienced emotions like these, right?

Note that some players stood out on the ice. I’m thinking of Cole Caufield and his two-goal performance, in particular. But, I am also thinking of Kaiden Guhle, who was the most used defender by Martin St-Louis.

We talk for the sake of talking, but… is Kaiden Guhle (already) the best defender in CH? The question deserves to be asked, I think.

On offense, I was talking about Caufield… But I’d also like to insert the names of Sean Monahan and Kirby Dach into the discussion. The two guys complemented each other wonderfully on the team’s second line with Mike Hoffman and I loved their respective matches.

Dach, let’s remember, had a good chance to score after making a wraparound and was involved from start to finish in the game.

Monahan, his, put one in on his birthday (he was celebrating his 28th birthday) and was still efficient in the face-off circle (60% efficiency). This is one of the things that hooked me, by the way.

When we looked at the formation of the CH and its trios before the match, we noted that Dach was going to pilot the center of the second trio. However, we have seen Monahan take care of the faceoff several times and when the puck had fallen, he would immediately reposition himself on the left side, where he was “supposed” to evolve during the game.

Both guys looked good. Monahan seems to understand his role perfectly and chemistry seems to be building between the two guys.

Obviously, this is good news for Martin St-Louis.

We know that St-Louis has talked about “duets” in recent weeks when talking about the construction of his lines and that he likes to work that way.

  1. Caufield – Suzuki
  2. Dvorak – Gallagher
  3. Evans – Pitlick

Could Monahan and Dach become the team’s fourth offensive duo? It’s possible. If Monahan continues to react well and Dach performs the way he has since the start of camp, they have a good chance of spending part of the year on the same line.

And, they fit well together, I think. A 28-year-old guy who’s been through some pretty tough times over the past few years, paired with a 21-year-old who’s been through some pretty tough times over the past year. The common denominator is, of course, injuries.

If they both stay healthy, I see them building a great bond. And if such a scenario were to occur, Martin St-Louis will have the happy hand. Kirby Dach too, he who could take advantage of Monahan to progress as a hockey player.

Me, I believe a lot in the former Flames. I was one of those who was happy to see him land in Montreal, especially since Kent Hughes got him for absolutely nothing. Calvary, he even received a first-round pick to make his acquisition!

Monahan is only 28 years old. He was struggling with very serious sores in recent seasons and it is exactly for this reason that his offensive production has decreased in an exceptional way.

But, in health… I think he can bring a lot to the organization of the Montreal Canadiens. If he plays the right way and is able to avoid injuries, let’s not rule out the possibility of him earning a new contract with the club.

A lot of

– Why not?
