FC St. Pauli: Coal for Jackson Irvine: So much Pauli is in the World Cup | Sports

The fans and the officials of FC St. Pauli are not in the mood for the World Cup in Qatar. This has been communicated several times. But: The neighborhood club is directly and indirectly represented at the controversial event.

So much St. Pauli is in the World Cup!

Jackson Irvine (29) represents the colors of FC St. Pauli on the pitch. After Jan Kocian, Ivo Knoflicek (1990 for the Czech Republic) and Aziz Bouhaddouz (2018 for Morocco), the Australian is the Kiez-Kicker’s fourth World Cup participant.

Irvine a few weeks ago: “I’m also proud to be at the World Cup as a St. Paulian.” For the midfielder, things get serious on Tuesday (8 p.m., ZDF) when Australia, as outsiders, face world champions France in the first group game goes.

Irvine’s participation in the World Cup is worthwhile for St. Pauli. Fifa gives the club 10,000 dollars (approx. 9,750 euros) for each day of participation (including preparation directly before the tournament). If everything goes “normal” and Australia is eliminated in the preliminary round, that’s a whopping 166,000 euros.

All the more annoying that team colleague Connor Metcalfe (23) did not make the final nomination.

Four other players with a Pauli past are also there. Daniel-Kofi Kyereh (26), who made his breakthrough at the Kiez-Klub, only switched to Bundesliga club SC Freiburg in the summer – and now wants to cause a sensation at the World Cup with Ghana.

In his early youth, Germany’s young star Youssoufa Moukoko (18) played at FC St. Pauli before moving to Borussia Dortmund until 2016. At the time, professional coach Timo Schultz (45) tried to keep him in Hamburg – without success.

The other two World Cup participants who were once at Millerntor: David Junior Hoilett (32, 2008/09 with Pauli, now Reading FC) is on duty for Canada and Ante Budimir (31, 2014 to 2016 under contract, now CA Osasuna) for Croatia.
