Serious drop in quality – Digital Foundry about The Callisto Protocol on the last generation of consoles

by Alexandra Hartman Editor-in-Chief

Eurogamer tech expert Oliver McKenzie posted a technical breakdown video The Callisto Protocol on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One consoles. According to a Digital Foundry specialist, the developers made serious compromises, but still did not reach the ideal.

Almost all aspects have undergone a significant downgrade.

  • Texture quality is greatly reduced, parallax occlusion and no decal maps at all, some textures take a very long time to load, some end up not loading completely

  • The geometry of objects has been simplified to the limit, shadow maps have been reduced in quality

  • Good quality lighting and character models

  • Shadows and post-processing effects are better on PS4 Pro and Xbox One X

  • Xbox One — 720-900p

  • PlayStation 4 — 864-1080p

  • Xbox One X/PS4 Pro — 1368-1440p

  • The intro cutscene is pre-recorded, real-time cutscenes are rendered at 24 frames

  • The frame rate on Xbox One is very erratic, often below 30 FPS, especially in combat; PS4/Pro is better, but suffers from severe stuttering

  • One X shows the most stable frame rate

  • McKenzie says the Series S version of The Callisto Protocol beats the One X version by a wide margin

The Callisto Protocol came out December 2nd.
