Yelling the name of a brand to zap its advertising? It’s Sony’s crazy idea

by Alexandra Hartman Editor-in-Chief

The pages of TV commercials are too long? What if you might speed them up…by shouting in your living room?

This is the crazy idea of Sony, which filed a patent in 2009 for voice recognition technology integrated into its televisions. The principle: shout the name of the brand, whose interrupts your current program, to skip the ad and move on to the next one. The project, which resurfaced on Twitter, has fortunately not (yet?) seen the light of day.

This would require that this “system for converting television commercials into interactive video games” (this is the description of the concept indicated in the patent) is not only supported by broadcasters and advertisers, but above all that consumers are ready to shout brand names in front of their screen.
