Located in the west of Antarctica, the Thwaites glacier is a giant with an area of 192,000 km² – more than four times that of Switzerland. Like many other glaciers around the world, it is currently losing ice at an accelerating rate, as a result of climate change. However, because of its enormous mass, it could very strongly contribute to the global rise in sea level, thus threatening the submersion of many populations living in coastal areas.
