Hospital swapped sperm in artificial insemination

The Puerta del Mar Hospital in Cádiz (Spain) is being sued. Reason: In the hospital, sperm was mixed up during artificial insemination.

The affected family, who does not want to be named, has filed a lawsuit for the equivalent of one million Swiss francs. As local media reports, because of the mix-up, the woman carried a child that was not her husband’s.

They discovered the fatal mix-up because the child bore no resemblance to the father. Immediately expecting the worst, they turned to a family friend who is a doctor for help. He then found out that the boy had a blood group that was not at all compatible with that of his father.

The couple then filed a complaint. The error caused “very serious and irreparable moral damage”.

According to local media, he destroyed his father’s dream of having a biological child with his wife. In addition, the whole thing would have “unpredictable additional emotional and personal effects” on the family in the future.

The mix-up is not only bad for the father. The mother also suffered from “anxiety” because she had carried a stranger’s child.

The investigation into the incident has not yet been completed, it said. The Ministry of Health responsible for the hospital in question has not yet commented.
