A glut of Ukrainian grain and other agricultural products has nearly halved the value of Vieru’s work, leaving farmers in eastern and central Europe and their governments, most of whom face elections this year or next, torn between solidarity with Ukraine and concern for their own survival.
“I am sad for them, but my heart breaks for myself as well,” said R. Vieru regarding the Ukrainians living across the border in the Danube River Delta. Opening the sliding doors, he showed a granary full of last year’s unsold harvest.
