Tom Brady apologized Thursday for comparing football to a military deployment, a comment the player made on his podcast during an interview with NBA star Kevin Durant.
“I chose my words poorly,” the Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback said in apologizing for what he said on the SiriusXM podcast “Let’s Go! With Tom Brady, Larry Fitzgerald and Jim Gray”
In the webcast, the seven-time Super Bowl winner discussed with Durant how difficult it was to balance his commitment as a highly successful athlete and his life outside of sports.
“This week I made a comment regarding playing football and being in the military, and I chose my words poorly,” Brady acknowledged. “I just want to express it on any opinion that people might have, I apologize.”
Durant was a guest on the podcast Monday.
“I almost look at football season like you’re being sent on a military mission and it’s like, ‘Here we go.’ There is only one way to do it… The reality is that you can only be true to yourself, don’t you think?
“When you say, ‘I wish I might spend more time doing this,’ ultimately your competitiveness gets the better of you, and even if you want to have this balance with work, you’re going to end up doing what you always do, and that’s why you are who you are,” Brady added. “You’re going to ask yourself, how do I do it?”
On Thursday, the quarterback was asked to explain his comment on the podcast.
To be honest, I really don’t want to dwell on it too much… I have enormous gratitude for everyone who served” in the military, Brady said.
“In the end, we play a sport and the military defends our country,” he said. “They are two different things and I should not make the comparison.”
