“IMF Loan Plan for Ghana: $3 Billion Aid Package & Debt Restructuring Negotiations”

This aid plan of 3 billion dollars spread over three years was negotiated in December, as part of a pre-agreement conditional on the implementation of reforms.

In the midst of an economic crisis, Ghana has been in default since the end of last year. Inflation there exceeds 40% on an annual basis and it is in this context that the country – very proud of its monetary sovereignty and in principle little inclined to ask for IMF aid – finally resolved to do everything to fulfill the necessary conditions for the granting of a loan.

Its creditor countries – France and China in the lead – have pledged to open negotiations for a restructuring of Ghana’s debt, enough to convince the International Monetary Fund to put the aid plan for Ghana on its agenda. . The financing guarantees are there, but the 3 billion are not yet approved.
