Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis’ conservative Nea Dimokratia (ND) clearly won the Greek parliamentary elections (see chart), but the country is heading for a new ballot. This could take place by early July.
The ND share of the vote is not enough for an absolute majority. Mitsotakis made it clear that he is relying on new elections instead of a governing coalition in order to be able to govern alone. Because he could benefit from a bonus that gives the election winner up to 50 additional seats in parliament in a new election. Other parties also see a coalition as unrealistic.
