French-Speaking Walloons Confused by Dutch Letters from SPF Finances: An Error or Administrative Oversight?

2023-06-19 17:33:39

Nearly 90,000 Walloons received a letter from the SPF Finances… in Dutch. A rather strange mail that has taken aback more than one. This is particularly the case of Muriel Dessy, a resident of La Louvière: “After investigation, I guessed it was for tax prepayments, but I don’t understand why it’s being sent to me in Dutch. We are in La Louvière and the main language is French.

Muriel has grasped it well, this letter offers the self-employed but also a minority of individuals, an advance payment of taxes with a reduction as a bonus.

But why did you send this one in Dutch to many French speakers? Florence Angelici, spokesperson for the FPS Finances, reveals that this is an error: “This is a computer problem. We adapted a program and this had an influence on the language of the letter. Those concerned will receive a letter in French in the coming days.

An error which is therefore due to a computer error and which has no real consequence.

Still, for Muriel, this type of error represents a waste of time “the freelancers already have so much administrative work, having to translate Dutch, it becomes really time-consuming and we can’t get by anymore.

La Louviéroise is now waiting to receive the correct document, in French.
